This was my first time seeing Mastodon play live. I’ve been very much into their music for almost 2 years now, but I couldn’t make it to the Crack the Skye tour. They played at the Fillmore Detroit tonight. There were two opening bands, Red Fang and Dillinger Escape Plan. I missed Red Fang because Brian had class tonight, so we couldn’t get there right at show time. Dillinger Escape Plan was not my style of music at all! Even if it was, it was SO LOUD that we had to spend that part of the show in the lobby. It was unnecessarily loud, probably loud enough to perforate ear drums! We ended up hanging with all the photographers on assignment for magazine publishers in the lobby, who had hurried up, got their shots in about 10 minutes, and retreated to the lobby for the same reason. Luckily, Mastodon had some sense and had their set turned way down to a reasonable level. Mastodon opened with “Dry Bone Valley” and “Black Tongue” off the Hunter album. Then they played quite a variety from their other albums. I only recognized songs from the last 3 albums, as I am unfamiliar with their previous material (a bit too heavy for me and not as melodic as their recent work). Somewhere in the set, they played “Curl of the Burl,” “Blasteroid,” “All the Heavy Lifting,” “Spectrelight,” and “Bedazzled Fingernails” from the Hunter. They played “Crystal Skull,” Capillarian Crest,” “Circle of Cysquatch,” and “Colony of Birchmen” from the Blood Mountain album. They played “Ghost of Karelia” and “Crack the Skye” off the Crack the Skye album. They ended with “Creature Lives” from the Hunter album and the other bands came out and helped with the chorus. It was a great show—they played everything to perfection. It was also one of the first shows I’ve been to in years that had a mosh pit, and a really crazy one at that. One part that cracked me up was when during a slow part of one of the songs, the mosh pit was going in slow motion and people were shoving each other as if time slowed down—it was hilarious!

Deadmau5 Concert at the Fillmore Detroit 10-21-11

My first techno show ever! Those of you that know me might be surprised that I even went to this, but I read such great reviews about the accompanying light show that I decided to check it out. Was I ever glad I did. This was truly the most amazing display I’ve ever seen at a concert in my whole life (and I’ve been to a lot of concerts). There was a huge LED screen as the backdrop, with Deadmau5 on top of a cube-like structure that had images projected onto it, plus there were 3 other smaller mobile cubes with images projected on them. The LED backdrop mixed with the projected images created beautiful, morphing graphics that were like artwork in motion. Everything was timed with the music, of course, too, making the whole experience totally amazing. It was such an unusual scene—a mouse on top of a cube with all kinds of crazy imagery around him. Just incredible. This is a can’t-miss show, even if you aren’t into techno. I can’t even express in words how awesome it was. I think Deadmaus was on stage about 2 1/2 hours too. The whole show lasted 5 hours, including the two opening DJs. Well worth the $50. My recommendation if you do ever see him is to get the cheaper seats in the balcony, like I did, because you really can see more of the graphics and light show that way. I can’t say enough about how incredible this show was and how glad I am that I decided to go.
